When talking with any homeschool parent, there are usually a few subjects where they might feel their child is NOT getting the instruction they need. Or, in my case, there are a few subjects where I feel that I have fallen short. Instructing the boys in handwriting is one of those areas. P had the advantage of 4 years of private school with someone else instructing him. R had a single year, but that wasn’t enough to cement it all in his brain. D started writing through self instruction as a preschooler and his bad habits have been hard for me to break.
To say that I was happy to finally see a vendor on the list that targets handwriting would be an understatement. Being asked by Alphabet Beats if I would consider reviewing one of their DVD products definitely put a smile on this homeschool mama’s face.
The DVD is NOT meant to be watched in a quick pace. Rather, the parent is suggested to only do a few of the letters in a given day. The younger the child, the fewer the amount of segments watched.
The parent is also encouraged to watch alongside their child for the first viewing of a given letter. Not only does that encourage the child to really focus on how “Miss Marnie” forms the letters, but the parent can also learn the chant for how to remember proper formation of the given letter. Miss Marnie also introduces several vocabulary words that begin with the letter of focus.
Both D and R are working with me using the lowercase version of the DVD. They definitely agree that the letter formation chants are catchy and will stick in your head for a while. So long as the chant helps them remember HOW to form their lowercase letters properly, I am happy to have them floating around the house and in my own head. I can’t say that in a few short weeks the boys have remarkably improved print. But, we’re making progress.
You can purchase Alphabet Beats from the TV Teacher for $35. While we reviewed the lowercase edition, you can also purchase one for uppercase letters at the same rate. Or, both editions can be yours for $64.99. They also sell workbooks to accompany the DVDs, although you can find those materials on the website under free downloads.
As always, you can read what other TOS Crew mates are saying about Alphabet Beats on the TOS Homeschool Crew page. Our family was provided with a copy of Alphabet Beats Lowercase DVD of in exchange for our review. No other compensation was provided to me and the opinions expressed in the review are my own.
